The special women’s court of the session’s court on Wednesday held nine men guilty of committing the brutal gang-rape of a ragpicker in Mulund in 2014. The court sentenced two convicts to life imprisonment, while the remaining seven were sentenced to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment each. All the accused were slapped with a fine of Rs 73,500 each.

The entire case relied on the DNA sample collected from the petticoat of the victim, and her own testimony. The woman had identified each of the accused, despite the fact that the offence was committed at night in a secluded area.

In her statement, the victim mentioned how, when she approached a police station after she was sexually assaulted, the officers there thought that she was a mentally-disturbed lady and refused to pay heed to her. “I was raped the entire night, with the men taking turns with me. I was raped brutally, with bite marks on my body. When the accused left, I gained some courage and reached the nearest police station. The police initially thought that I was a mad person, looking at my hair and appearance. However, when I collapsed in the police station, they realised that something was wrong,” the victim said.

The victim identified all the accused in court and explained to the court the role each of them had played. The prosecution examined 47 witnesses, with all of them supporting the prosecution. The prosecution supported its claim with the call data records of the accused. Even the medical evidence was strong enough to prove the prosecution’s case beyond reasonable doubt.

The police had arrested Ajay Gochand, Mahesh Maragaje, Waheed Khan, Dastagir Khan, Waseem Shaikh, Manpreet Singh Gill, Bhuwan Hamaal, Dhiraj Panchaal and Vishaal Sood for gang-raping the victim. The court held all the accused guilty of gang-rape, kidnapping, assaulting the woman, wrongful restraint, wrongful confinement, and criminal intimidation and conspiracy. Waheed and Vishal were slapped with the additional charge of committing unnatural sex. The two were sentenced to life imprisonment.
