Six parents and two agents have been arrested for their alleged involvement in a racket in which the parents allegedly submitted forged birth certificates to schools to secure admissions for their children under the Right To Education (RTE) Act.

The accused were arrested on Wednesday following a complaint filed by the principal of SBM School in Sion.

"The parents had submitted counterfeit documents to seek admission for their children. During a verification of the documents, it was discovered that there were discrepancies in the birth date mentioned in six certificates, and there was something amiss in these certificates. We then cross-checked the documents with the education department, we found out that the certificates were forged and dates were changed to avail of benefits under the RTE Act by manipulating the childrens' age to meet the admission criteria under RTE," said Rebecca Shinde, principal of SBM School in Sion.

"The police registered a case and arrested the accused on Wednesday after we called the parents," Shinde added.

According to the police, under the RTE scheme, a student whose family's annual income is Rs 1 lakh or less is exempted from paying school fees from classes 1 to 8. To take the advantage of this benefit, the six arrested parents, with the help of two agents, produced fake birth certificates to secure admission for their children.

"We suspect that the agents may have forged more documents to help other parents who are seeking admission for their children. The agents charge Rs 10,000 per admission. We are conducting an investigation to unearth whether the accused had also submitted forged income certificates," said Nasir Shaikh, Senior Police Inspector of Antop Hill police station. The accused were produced in court, where they were remanded in police custody till March 27.
