6 held for attempting to commit dacoity

The Matunga police on Tuesday arrested six persons, including a taxi driver, for allegedly attempting to commit Rs8 crore dacoity. The police have seized two choppers, three small gas cylinders and their regulators, a screwdriver, two gloves, a cello tape and a blue-coloured plastic bag from the gang.

Those arrested have been identified as Santosh Hayal (21), Nepal Manna (34), Sumit Yadav (34), Rajan Das (23), Pradeep Natme (24) and Pratapsingh Manchanda (58).

"Around 3.45am on Tuesday, while our team was patrolling near Maheshwari Udyan, they noticed a few suspicious persons sitting in a vehicle. When our officers approached them to make inquiries, the suspects tried to flee from the spot. While six of them were caught, three managed to escape," said deputy commissioner of police (zone-IV) N Ambika.

She added, "Initial investigation revealed that all the arrested accused were planning to loot Rs8 crore from a diamond and jewellery shop near Maheshwari Udyan. Before they could execute their plan, the accused had done a recce of the said shop. All the arrested persons have past criminal records, including theft, housebreaking and robbery. They all had come in contact with each other while they were in Arthur Road jail."

Those arrested have been booked under sections 399 (making preparation to commit dacoity), 400 (punishment for belonging to gang of dacoits) and 402 (assembling for purpose of committing dacoity) of the Indian Penal Code. The accused persons were produced before a local court and were remanded in police custody till August 20.
