The Directorate of Forensic Science Laboratories (FSL) has so far this year imparted training to 4,500 students from at least 400 medical colleges in the seven centers of the laboratory on different forensic tests, including the use of cow meat testing kit. There had been instances in the past wherein meat traders were victimised by cow-vigilante and later test of seized meat revealed that it was not of a cow.

The FSL officials showed case studies and experiments to the students and were taught about the cyber forensics, DNA tests, psychological tests, brain mapping, lie detector tests, Biology and Serology kits, and ballistics test. The students were given the kits to study the equipment and its uses.

According to FSL officials, the cow meat test, which takes around a week now can be tested via ELISA test in under 30 minutes. These equipment have been provided in the forensic vans. The importance of these handy kits is to defuse tensions among police and civilians.

Dr KV Kulkarni, Director of FSL, said, "The seven centers of FSL have been conducting the workshops for students and are teaching about the cow meat tests. The students were taught about the ELISA test which helps in detecting the cow meat."

"The officials conducted workshops explaining the importance of the cyber forensics," Kulkarni said. "The importance of cyber attacks taking place in the country was also explained. We have been conducting these lectures to ensure that the students are trained about the forensic tests," Kulkarni added.

The medical colleges in the periphery of Mumbai, Nagpur, Pune, Aurangabad, Nashik, Amravati, Nanded, and Kolhapur centers have been sent invites this year for free students' workshop.

"The students have been invited by the Regional FSLs, which also go around the mobile forensic vans, to spread awareness not only for students but also for the police officers. The on-spot test kits are available inside the mobile vans which cater to the needs of daily cases being made by various police departments," Kulkarni added.
