While the maze of flyovers at Kalanagar Junction at Bandra East has received green clearance from the state government, the project now awaits permission of the Bombay high court to cut three mangroves so the tendering process may begin.

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority's (MMRDA's) plan for "proposed construction of interchange by flyovers at Kalanagar Junction" has been approved by Maharashtra Coastal Zone Management Authority (MCZMA) in its meeting held on May 16. Earlier this month, dna had reported that the project is likely to get the MCZMA's nod.

"The next step is to take the court's permission to cut two-three mangrove plants. Thereafter, we can commence the tendering process for the bridges," said UPS Madan, metropolitan commissioner, MMRDA.

Development authority officials said that an attempt will be made to reposition one of the pillars so that there is no need to cut any mangroves. The HC's clearance is needed to cut the trees and plant compensatory mangroves.

The development authority aims to have four flyovers and a road to clear the daily rush-hour traffic chaos at the entrance of Bandra Kurla Complex. On an average, 12,000 cars pass the Kalanagar Junction every hour.

There will be a flyover each to reach the Bandra Worli Sea Link from Bandra Kurla Complex and to the business district from the Bandra Worli Sea Link. The total length of these two 2-lane flyovers will be 1,888 metres.

The flyover running from Dharavi towards the Western Express Highway (WEH) will join the flyover running from Bandra Kurla Complex at the second level, and there will be a three-lane flyover connecting the flyover reaching WEH. This flyover will be 2,920 metres long.

There will also be a 12-foot-wide road running through the government land to streamline the traffic from Dharavi to Bandra Worli Sea Link. The estimated cost of the entire project is Rs227 crore.
