A 48-year old woman committed suicide by hanging herself at her 19th floor residence at Dongri on Tuesday. The police claimed that the woman was a psychiatric patient for the past 15 years and was receiving treatment for the same.

The deceased has been identified as Mumtaz Aziz Shaikh, a resident of Rehmaniya Crystal building on Nishaanpada Road in Dongri.

According to the police, on Tuesday, a call was received by the police control room that a woman has committed suicide at her residence. The Dongri police was then alerted after which a police team rushed to the spot.

Before police reached the spot, relatives of Shaikh had pulled down her body. A punchnama was carried out at the spot and the body was sent to JJ Hospital for post-mortem, police said.

"Shaikh's relatives said that she was having psychological problem for the past 15 years and was receiving treatment for the same at Habib hospital. We have registered an accidental death case in the matter and are probing further," said an officer from Dongri police station.

In another case, a 24-year old maid jumped from the 11th floor of a building at Girgaum in VP Road on Monday.

According to the VP Road police, around 10pm, the deceased, identified as Mamta Suresh Ghanekar (24) jumped from the window of the common passage of the 11th floor of Shreepati Tower, Girgaun, where her aunt used to live. She was taken to Saifee hospital where she succumbed to her injuries.

"Ghanekar used to visit her aunt often. On Monday, she went to her aunt's building, but did not meet her and instead jumped from the 11th floor. No suicide note has been found so far. The reason for the suicide is unclear and we are still investigating into it," said senior police inspector SM Kamble.

Ghanekar was a resident of Navjeevan Society at Mumbai Central and worked in the same society as a domestic worker. She was unmarried and lived alone, police said.

The police have dismissed a possibility of any foul play and claimed that it was a suicide. "The CCTV footage of the society and the testimony of several eye-witnesses conclude that this was a suicide case," added Kamble.
