Sukhram Bhill (35), a resident of Jalgaon and Kashinath Pujara (38), a resident of Karjat in Raigad, lodged in Thane and Adharwadi prisons respectively, were sent to Thane mental hospital by the jail superintendents.
To accomplish a "secret mission", two mentally ill patients from the criminal ward of Thane mental hospital, managed to escape after breaking the latch of the first-floor door. Earlier, both the patients were accused in a murder case and were lodged in different prisons in Thane.
Sukhram Bhill (35), a resident of Jalgaon and Kashinath Pujara (38), a resident of Karjat in Raigad, lodged in Thane and Adharwadi prisons respectively, were sent to Thane mental hospital by the jail superintendents. The duo hatched a plan to escape from ward number 8 on ground floor reserved for criminals who were mentally-ill patients. The duo managed to reach the first floor and break open the iron latch of the door. They climbed up a floor and used a tree branch to jump over the safety wall of the compound and escape.
A day later, Bhill returned to the hospital while a police team has been dispatched to Karjat to trace Pujara.
"When the prison authorities questioned Bhill, he revealed that the duo were on a secret mission (sic) but he came back, while his friend has gone to his native place in Karjat," said a Wagle Estate police officer.
"The duo were keeping track of the staff in the hospital and managed to escape once they got the chance. The authorities realised this only after the duo's escape," added the officer.
"We have booked them under section 224 (Resistance or obstruction by a person to his lawful apprehension) and 34 (common intent) of the Indian Penal Code. A police team has been sent to trace the second patient in Karjat and he will be nabbed soon," said Krushna Babar, investigating officer, Wagle Estate police station.
