While the residents of Kalbadevi have been opposing the gold workshops in their area for almost 16 years they are happy with the civic body's action against the units over the past one month.

Harkrishan Girodia, one of the residents who took up the matter is enthusiastic about the action being taken by the BMC. However he believes it is not the final solution. "This has been done in the past also but the problem continues to hound residents," he said, adding that he will meet the civic administration next week to find a permanent solution.

Girodia added that they have research papers from KEM Hospital that showed how the gold workshops had lead to respiratory illnesses among locals. "The BMC should take action against them as per the Maharashtra Regional and Town Planning Act to ensure that they do not start operating the units again," said Girodia.

Raj Purohit, MLA from Colaba said "I have had a discussion with both the gold processing associations and residents about the matter and it needs to solve amicably instead of making a hue and cry."

"It is better that all stakeholders sit including the civic administration to find a solution which is shifting gold processing units to another area," said Purohit. He added that he would raise the matter in the next assembly session.
