St Xaviers High School for boys at Fort is all set for its Sesquicentennial Jubilee Celebrations on Saturday. The school will also announce their dairy for the new jubilee events. The school will enter its 150th year from June 23. The school that started with 115 boys in 1860, currently has 2074 students.

The events will start from 6pm at the school auditorium. Dignitaries and alumni of the school, retired IPS officer Julio Ribeiro of 1944 batch, Deepak Parekh, chairman of Housing Development Finance Corporation from 1961 batch, Dr. Ketki Turel a neurosurgeon in Bombay hospital from 1962 batch, Dr. Milind Kirtane an ENT/Otorhinolaryngologist from 1963 batch, Ashok Chavan former Chief Minister of Maharashtra from 1975 batch and Harindra Singh, Chairman and Managing Director of Percept limited from 1975 batch will attend it.

The school was first set up in March 1960 at Glass House at Cavel and came to be known as Kalbadevi School or St Xavier's school. They welcomed the first batch of 115 boys on 19 March 1860, under the leadership of Fr. Leo Meurin. The following year 1861, the number of students grew to 300. Glass House proved inadequate to hold the crowd. Luckily, the government moved fast to grant the fathers a plot that they had applied for and in 1866, they took possession of the land on which St Xavier's High School stands today. The plot — 200 feet by 160 feet — is on a lease for 999 years at a nominal rate of one rupee a year.

In October, 1867, Bishop Leo Meurin finalised the building plans and gave shape to the current edifice. Money was raised through public appeals, donations from Nawabs, Begums and Rajas, Sunday Mass collections and house to house collections.

In May 1869, the school migrated from Cavel to the present location at 289, Lokmanya Tilak Marg at Fort. In 1990, the first school sports held on the grounds of the Elphinstone school. In 1905, first four lady teachers joined the school. In 1955, Fr. Richard Pereira took over as the first Indian Principal. With him the Indian Jesuit had arrived.
