The Anudanit Shiksha Bachao Samiti (ASBS), has in the past, made several petitions to save and expand publicly funded education, and ensure that education becomes the right of every child. Now, it claims that 150 children from economically weaker sections (EWS) have not got admissions in the 25% quota under the Right To Education (RTE). However, BMC officials claim that no parent has approached them since the past month for admission.

While the civic body had a tough time in admitting children from EWS, the department claims to have admitted almost all children in schools under the 25% quota. Still, the ASBS claims that there are still 150 children from Andheri, Dharavi and Jogeshwari areas who have not got admission under the quota.

The ASBS filed a PIL in the Bombay high court for the children who were denied admission, after which the BMC could fill 350 admissions on the instructions of the HC.

ASBS secretary, K Narayan said that the new deputy director of school education has sent letters to zonal education inspectors asking for action to be taken.

Narayan added: "We hope to meet him soon and if we fail to get an appointment, we will stage a sit-in there."

The deputy director of school education, BD Fadtare said: "I have sent notices to the western zone education officials asking them to forward it to the schools denying admission to children from EWS. These schools are hardly 4-5 in number."

An education official from BMC said: "The last admission done under the RTE was in the final week of September. We have forced schools to take admissions and have completed the process now. It is not true that 150 children have still not got admission. In fact, we have kept calling parents to ask whether their child's admission has been done. Some told us that they have already sought admission elsewhere."
