No place like home

Stand-up comedian Amogh Ranadive tells us why his neighbourhood, Shivaji Park, Dadar, is still his favourite place in Mumbai

No place like home

Favourite place to de-stress...
I don't have one favourite place; I have a few. There are a few local bars like Green, Open House and AB's that I visit frequently with my friends. The food is great and the alcohol is well…alcohol. Although, on those rare days when drinking is not on the agenda, just hanging out with my best friends in any of the quiet lanes of Shivaji Park or on the katta helps me de-stress.

Shivaji Park vs. any other neighbourhood in Mumbai...
They say that the grass is always greener on the other side. I'd love to live in a plush apartment somewhere in Colaba or Worli but the fact of the matter is that there's no better neighbourhood than Shivaji Park (I've grown up here, so my opinion may be biased). It is peaceful, serene and the people are great. We have the best vada pav and misal here.

Rate the safety level of your locality on a scale of 1 to 10...
Seven, and I'm only saying that because there have been some reports recently of break-ins and robberies. But that's still few and far between.

A food joint you’d recommend...
First up is Ashok Vada Pav in the Kirti College lane; their vada pavs are simply divine. You should also try out Prakash on Gokhale Road for some great misal pav, thalipeeth and piyush. Finally, a real gem is Malvani Katta, a small establishment that only offers take-away.

One person from your neighbourhood who makes your days easier...
Unfortunately, I'm on the road so often for shows that I don't get to spend as much time as I would like to in Shivaji Park. But when I am home, just hanging out with my neighbourhood friends is what I look forward to. I went to school with some of these guys and literally grew up with them.

One thing you don't like about your neighbourhood...
We don't have Krispy Kreme. And the property rates are quite high!

One reason why you’d never move out of your locality...
We have Ashok Vada Pav. And the property rates everywhere else are quite high too!
