Can't desert party when it's facing rough weather: Sharad Sonawane

With all its biggies biting dust in the assembly polls, it was little-known Sharad Sonawane who emerged as the face-saver for Raj Thackeray-led Maharashtra Navnirman Sena. Even as the party is struggling to keep intact its den in Nashik, where many of its office-bearers have resigned en masse, the 40-year-old legislator from Junnar, in the backdrop of reports of BJP luring him, tells Eknath Makne he won't leave the party. Instead, the first-timer exhorts he is readying for a five-year job of representing MNS party in the House. Excerpts:

Can't desert party when it's facing rough weather: Sharad Sonawane

Please tell us about your background
I entered politics in 2006 through Shiv Sena. The saffron party had offered me ticket for 2009 state polls, but all of a sudden I was asked to withdraw. I did so and started working for the party again in Junnar. However, I sensed similar sidelining tactic within the Sena ahead of the Lok Sabha elections too. So, I chose to go with MNS two weeks before the Parliamentary polls. I thought the party's ideology suits me better.

Soon after your victory, there was word doing round about you joining BJP
It was nothing but a rumour. I agree, our party did not fare well in the elections. But that doesn't mean I will leave Raj saheb. I became known in the state as the lone MNS legislator. My identity is due to MNS. So, it would be inappropriate if I leave the party when it is facing rough weather.

But was there any offer made to you?
(Takes pause) Not really. I was approached only by the BJP which sought my support while it is about to prove majority on the floor of House. But that's it. There was no offer to desert MNS and join BJP.

So, is the MNS going to support BJP in the House?
Yes. Raj saheb has asked me to support the BJP-led government over the issue of development. But he has also instructed me to not take sides with the government if it takes decisions that are not in public interest. In such a case, I will oppose the ruling parties.

You are a first-time legislator and plus the lone party member. How are you preparing for the job inside House?
After I got elected, saheb told me I will have to raise various issues grappling Maharashtra. He has assured me his full support. The party has also promised total co-operation from senior former legislators like Bala Nandgaokar, Pravin Darekar and others. The party has made me available papers to study issues raised by them in the House over the last five years. I am going through the documents. So, even though I am alone, I will be pushing the party's agenda aggressively under the guidance of party leadership.

What is your agenda?
I want to set up Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation units in my constituency.
