Walmart lends a helping hand to women entrepreneurs

Taking forward Walmart Stores Inc's ongoing commitment to empowering women, Walmart India has initiated a new program aimed at helping female entrepreneurs enhance their skills, capability and sustainability of their business. To this effect, the retailer has launched the 'Entrepreneurship Development Program' for women-owned businesses (WOBs) with a select group of 32 participants after shortlisting applications from WOBs in different categories from states like Andhra Pradesh, Delhi NCR, Telangana, Punjab and Uttar Pradesh.

Commenting on the launch of this initiative, Krish Iyer, president & CEO of Walmart India, said, "This initiative is designed to help women entrepreneurs achieve higher levels of business growth and help make them more competitive and resilient in today's dynamic business environment. We hope this program will create a pipeline of women suppliers for the industry as well as for Walmart India, as we continue to grow in the country."

WEConnect International and Vrutti are the organisations that will implement the program for the first batch of 32 WOBs. During the nine-month program, the women will undergo capacity building, training, mentoring and technical support, customised to the needs of their businesses.

The company said in a statement that Walmart has an ongoing commitment to empowering women around the world and helping WOBs succeed and grow. And as part of the initiative, the company is committed to source $20 billion from women for its US business and double sourcing from WOBs internationally. "Accordingly, Walmart India is continuously looking for long-term associations with potential WOBs and supporting this important work", company said.

Jenny Grieser, senior director of Women's Economic Empowerment for Walmart, said, "We are thrilled with the work Walmart India is doing to economically empower women. Empowering women is the right thing to do for the community and it also makes good business sense. Walmart India's leadership in empowering women will be an example for other countries around the world."

Sansui ups 4K TV play

Leading Japanese consumer electronics brand Sansui is looking to capture 10% market share in the television space and is targeting to sell 10 lakh units this year. The company has expanded its product portfolio by adding a range of new televisions including a curve 4K Ultra HD LED with golden bezel as well as other premium TVs viz. 4K Ultra HD LED, Smart Connect TV and Full HD TV.


According to Amitabh Tiwari, COO, Sansui, the company has added 10 new power packed televisions to make the portfolio dynamic. "We understand that today's consumer is intelligent and tech-savvy and thus looks for smart yet premium products. Underlying this, the new ranges are designed to offer the best to the customers and stimulate their senses. With this, we envisage to achieve market share of 10%," he said.

The new range of televisions have been priced starting from Rs 20,000 going up to Rs 2,70,000 for the 165 cm curve 4K LED TV with golden bezel. To effectively reach out to the target audience and establish the brand, Sansui will launch an exhaustive marketing plan that will include a combination of above the line (ATL), below the line (BTL) and digital to promote the new series.

Futuristic tech show

Consumer durables major LG Electronics India is showcasing its futuristic technology at the fourth edition of its annual technology convention in Mumbai. On display this year are products from its signature series and cutting-edge premium lineup consisting of state-of-the-art OLED 4K TV with Dolby Vision, 12 kg front load washing machine and air purifier, among others. The most interesting offering however is the 950 litres knock-on door-in-door refrigerator that lights up and becomes transparent when you knock on the door, allowing you to check what is inside the refrigerator without even opening the door. Utilising LG's innovative door-in-door feature without opening the entire refrigerator, cold air loss is reduced by up to 47%, which helps keep food fresh for longer. The refrigerator also has a Wi-Fi Eclipse display.
