Tata Motors has tied up with global software giant Microsoft Corp to develop connected vehicle technologies using artificial intelligence (AI), advanced machine learning, and the Internet of Things (IoT). The auto major has plans to monetise the technology later.

The first such connected vehicle under the recently-launched TaMo platform will be showcased at the 87th Geneva International Motor show to be held on March 7 this year. The car will be packed with functionalities like advanced navigation, predictive maintenance, telematics and remote monitoring features, the company said.

"We may later use some of these functionality for revenue generation in future" said Guenter Butschek, CEO and MD, Tata Motors Ltd.

According to the officials from Tata Motors, the company is presently concentrating on the three ongoing trends in the auto world, viz; electrification, autonomous driving and connectivity, and is therefore attempting to bring the new technologies in its upcoming cars. As per an estimate available with Tata Motors, around 90% of new cars will by connected by 2020.

When asked whether developing it as an alternative revenue generating model will work in a price-sensitive market like India, Butschek added that there are enough customers in the market who want to get enhanced connectivity while driving and are ready to pay for the service.

The company said that with the new initiative, based on the profile of customers and location data, vehicle owners will be able to receive proactive point-of-interest, shopping and route assist recommendations. Pre-emptive service alerts based on vehicle health data will enable owners to avoid costly down time en-route on planned road trips. Also, by capturing, analysing and acting on live road conditions, vehicle owners will be able to increase safety, optimise vehicle performance by avoiding roadblocks, parking availability, rough terrain, etc.
