Shimla Mayor Sanjay Chauhan today said the Himachal Pradesh Tourism Board's "initiative" to replace a LED screen at Ridge here is an encroachment on the autonomy of the Shimla Municipal Corporation (SMC).

"The initiative taken by the tourism department to replace the LED screen at Ridge is an encroachment on autonomy of the SMC and is in negation to the 74th Amendment to the Constitution," he said in a letter to Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh.

Urging Singh to direct the department to not replace the LED screen, the Mayor said, "The present screen has already been installed after following procedures and taking permission. The SMC is also generating revenue from it." The department has not sought any permission from the SMC to replace the screen, he claimed, adding the tourism department was "unnecessarily poking its nose in the city's affairs"

"We are not against the installation of such screens, but they have to be installed at the place specified by the SMC.

It would be unwarranted to replace the functional Screen with new one," Chauhan added.
