The Centre has distributed over one lakh LED bulbs under the Ujala scheme in the city.

The Ujala (Unnat Jeevan by Affordable LEDs and Appliances for All) scheme was launched in the city last month.

Along with distributing the LED (Light emitting diode) bulbs, 15,000 20W LED tubelights as well as 5,000 BEE 5-star rated energy efficient fans have also been distributed to the city.

"With the distribution of LED bulbs, tubelights and energy efficient fans, there has been a cumulative saving of over 39,000 kWh of energy, which has translated into a savings of over Rs 1.55 lakh in consumers' electricity bills," an Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) spokesman said here today.

EESL is the nodal agency for distribution of these appliances.

Saurabh Kumar, Managing Director, EESL said the target is to make Chandigarh a 100 per cent energy efficient city.

Under Ujala scheme, consumers in the city can buy 4 LED bulbs, 4 LED tubelights and 4 BEE 5-star rated energy efficient fans.

The price of each LED bulb is Rs 70 as against the market price of Rs 300-350; each LED tubelight is priced at Rs 230, whereas the price of each energy efficient fan is Rs 1,150.

A joint venture between NTPC Ltd, Power Finance Corporation, Rural Electrification Corporation and Powergrid, EESL was set up under the Ministry of Power to facilitate implementation of energy efficiency projects.
