ZTE believes in Narendra Modi's Make in India vision: Bill Yuan

In an expectation that Indian mobile handset consumers are set to swiftly upgrade to smartphones, global players are rushing to India to place their high-end models in the domestic market. After years of operating in India, Chinese telecom major ZTE Corporation is also eyeing this segment. Earlier this week, it launched Nubia Z9 mini which will be exclusively sold on Amazon.in. Bill Yuan, CEO, terminal sales – South Asia – ZTE Corporation, told Praveena Sharma that despite a slight dip in smartphone sales in the last quarter, the emerging trends in the domestic handset market were just right for expansion in the premium segment.

ZTE believes in Narendra Modi's Make in India vision: Bill Yuan

What was the motivation to debut a Nubia Z9 model in India now?
It's the right time for us to be here. The market is growing rapidly and consumers are upgrading. People are able and willing to pay more for premium products, that's our understanding of this market.
A lot of mobile phone sales in India are happening online. It is 30% growth, which is a very high percentage compared to some other countries. In China, it is 20% and the US just 10%. We see a positive trend which is more important than the figures (of current sales).

What is your plans for India?
We want to be the leader in the premium phone segment. In the smartphone segment, there is intense competition with many Indian players coming out with models that are very competitively priced, how do plan to counter that?

We don't talk about competition, we see opportunities. India is a price-sensitive market but the price at which we are launching is the right price. Globally, phones in the range of Rs 12,000 to Rs 24,000 constitute around 22% of the market. In India, it is only 8-11%. So, this price segment is underserved.

Does it make better sense for you to manufacture here or sell imported handsets?
Manufacturing in India is a better option for us. We believe in PM's (Prime Minister Narendra Modi) vision (of Make in India). It would be good for everybody. It will reduce the burden of custom duty (for us), local supply chain would be faster and also create job opportunities here.

Where do you plan to set up the plant?
We are evaluating different ways of how to set up the plant. Once it is finalised we will release the news.

Availability of land is a major issue, how will you overcome that?
Different states have different process. They welcome investment from a foreign firm. Land, I don't think is an issue. It (land) is not easy to get but they (states) are keen to work with us.
