Following WhatsApp crossing 500 million users worldwide and Skype's 300 million, Viber, too, has made its mark, and it is now unclear which app will dominate ahead. Anubhav Nayyar, country head, Viber India, spoke to Krishna Bahirwani about the company's future. Excerpts from the interview:

Viber says cheaper overseas calls trump card in India: Anubhav Nayyar

What do you feel is the differentiating factor for Viber in India?
A very crucial differentiating factor that we bring to the table is the interface. Viber products are simple, clutter-free and easy to understand. We try to identify key consumer needs and deliver a product according to that. In anything and everything we do, whether it's our R&D or product development, we keep the consumer at the heart of it. Secondly, our availability across multiple platforms, including desktop, iOS, Android, BlackBerry, Windows Phone, differentiates us from other apps. Viber works seamlessly on mobile devices as well as on desktops. We are constantly improving our products and recently rolled out a new version of our desktop app, and in this era of multi-device ownership that has really helped create a niche for us. People love the fact that they can start a conversation on the phone and continue it on their desktop, and if required go back to their mobiles.
Thirdly, we have seen a strong trend in India where conversations need to have emotions. For this reason our users can not only send messages but also exchange stickers, send locations, and edit and share photos. These are some of our fastest growing features. Another feature that has been tremendous growth in India is Viber Out, with which you can call any number anywhere in the world at subsidised rates. Of course, if both the users in a conversation have Viber then the call is free.

VentureBeat says Viber has crossed 400 million users, is that true?
We are close to 400 million users globally, and in India alone we have more than 20 million users. The growth in India has really picked up over the last few months, making it a key market globally for Viber.

What future do you see for voice over internet protocol and instant messaging industry?
The VoIP and IM industry is growing at a very rapid pace in India. Consumer adoption has been very high across the country. Simplicity of use along with consumer relevant features and content will drive this industry, which has also been our focus area. Viber has always kept metrics such as ergonomics and usability at the core of its product. By that we are not only referring to ease of use, but also a rich and enjoyable user experience. Features such as stickers and doodles ensure that the 'fun' aspect is always there. We have also worked hard to make sure that we are available across multiple technologies and platforms – from a range of mobile platforms to personal computers and tablets. We have made a conscious effort to offer a seamless experience across all these devices.

In India where people are apprehensive of online financial transactions how do you plan on making Viber Out a success?
Viber Out is already a big success in India. It allows users to call anywhere across the globe at subsidised prices. The fact that we are offering both a great value to our users along with the best in class calling experience has ensured that Viber Out is already a success in India. Currently, all Viber Out credits have to be purchased online.

What can you tell us about user privacy and safety while using Viber?
Viber takes your privacy very, very seriously. After all, we are ourselves using the product, and we care about our privacy. We are constantly working to find ways to bring significant security features into upcoming versions.

What is the secret behind Viber's encryption?
We devote a lot of investment both in terms of time and money to ensure we have best in class security and encryption.
