The open letter season is upon us, writes Priyanka Chaturvedi

Everyone is penning an open letter on any and every issue in the country today, some are writing open letters as replies to those who have written a grudging whining open letter. If an open letter can change the attitude and discourse of the nation let me also attempt writing one to all the pet peeves in my life! One-line open letters should suffice, so here goes:

* To many of my co-passengers on a flight who jump out of their seat to pull their bags out as soon as a plane lands at their destination: Relax! The crew isn’t going to leave you behind inside the aircraft or the pilot just won’t take off immediately on landing. Take a deep breath, sit, wait for plane to park and exit doors open and then exit. Easy-peasy, no?

* To all my fellow car drivers: Just because the signal has turned green doesn’t mean the cars will get wings of their own and start flying, so go easy on the honking! Everyone in the traffic ahead of you is just as eager to reach their destination. Patience.

* To all the moral guardians amongst us: Read a news report which said authorities in Chandigarh have banned women from wearing short skirts in a discotheque as it is seditious! Let’s get one thing clear, what you wear is not  an invite for rape, nor is hanging out at night clubs. A two-year-old is not raped for what she is wearing nor is a 60-year-old. we have been through this debate thousands of times, yet our moral guardians learn no lesson!

* To all the parents who are handing over their fancy car and bike keys to your minor children for them to become speed demons on the road: Besides breaking the laws of the land hope you do realise the precedent you are setting for your children to follow? That it is easy to circumvent rules in the country. Hope you also realise that you are pushing the minor to an early irresponsible death, if not of themselves then the hapless victim who has no idea that he could be killed while crossing the road because a minor is behind the wheels.

* To all the reckless bike riders without a helmet riding on footpaths to save themselves a few minutes from traffic jams: Footpaths are meant for people who walk, besides hardly any drive worthy road in Mumbai, footpaths taken over by hawkers , spare a thought for the ones who these footpaths are meant for! Also without a helmet? Don’t care enough for your own life doesn’t mean others walking on that footpath don’t either!

I have more pet peeves to write about, how can I be done with just a few, no? On top of them being to those who reply to every email invite/ forward in a reply all mode and also to all WhatsApp forward lovers, but then I must save up more content for my next open letter, whenever the next open letteritis strikes the nation! Let me hope all readers agree to the above. Or wait... if you don’t, there is an open letter reply option available!
