Recently, style influencer and model Gigi Hadid has been sporting micro cat eye frames creating an instant style statement with her sunnies. Model Kendall Jenner, too, is a fan of the angular, Matrix-esque glasses as is pop star Rihanna. Closer home, it’s fashion maven and actress Sonam Kapoor, who’s been giving the retro-inspired tiny shades her own twist. Kareena Kapoor Khan, who is known for stepping out in a different pair of shades each time she hits the gym, grabbed eyeballs recently with her purple lenses that added a pop of colour to her outfit.

Deepika Padukone paired an indigo-tinted pair with her denims, tee and jacket look at the airport. Boyfriend Ranveer Singh, meanwhile, rocked a ski goggles-inspired look a few days ago. Mirrored sunglasses are also one of the major trends for the summer and Malaika Arora showed how it’s done by teaming her classic aviators with a comfy white maxi dress.

THROWBACK TO THE ’70S

Sunglasses are an easy and instant way to add glamour to an outfit. Archana Walavalkar, stylist and co-founder, StyleCracker, says, “Like a few other vintage trends, the ’70s-inspired tinted sunglasses are back and people can’t keep their hands off them. Experiment with different colours — pick from pinks, purples and yellows for the summer. Transparent frames are a fun way to let your eyes be visible. From Gigi Hadid to Selena Gomez, Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt, all of them carry off this style really well.” For those who want to go more edgy with their sunnies, there are a couple of other types that have caught on. “The super futuristic, X-Girl sunglasses are also hot right now. They’re urban and almost robotic,” adds Archana.

MIRROR EFFECT

Mirrored shades add an interesting twist of mystery to the wearer. The reflective surface is generally high shine metallic or of a holographic sheen, which gives a trendy modern appeal, explains designer Hemant Sagar of Lecoanet Hemant. “Most of these glasses are in the aviator style and have a timeless as well as universal appeal. Someone like Ranveer Singh carries it off very well with his effervescent and sassy vibe,” he says. Celebrity stylist Rupa Chourasia mentions that reflector sunglasses add some bling to your look.

“Glam up your summer outfits with reflectors. They go great with most beach wear and are a must of any vacation wardrobe. Dusky-skinned men and women can sport these glares in most colours, except for metallic grey. Also, what matters is the colour of outfit you want to combine it with,” she says.

TINY YET EDGY

The micro cat eye frames are the most talked about this summer, opines Maneka Harisinghani, celebrity stylist. “The unique aspect about them is that they are very tiny and narrow, small enough to just cover the tiniest sliver of your face. These best suit those with narrow and angular face shapes,” she adds. For round and oval faces, Maneka suggests opting for rectangular frames. And for a square face, tiny oval frames or big round frames can both work. Pair your sunglasses with an unexpected style, like boho apparel. It’s easy to reach for your ’60s coat or an A-line dress, but mixing it up can be much more unique and fun. Retro sunglasses can take an otherwise modest outfit and make it stand out.
