Films, the world over, leave a lot to be desired in their representation of females. But every once in a while, they surprise us. Producers surprise us by green lighting these films. Writers surprise us by writing those characters. Actors surprise us by taking up those parts which portray the women as let's see...human? Then, they get remembered as queens.

21-year-old Shivani Gorle who started a project called 'Queens OnScreen' could not agree more. The Thane-based girl's initiative is a compilation of illustrations of powerful female leads in films. “I wanted to let people know that in the last century, women have come a long way from playing just sex objects in films. They are portraying revolutionary roles in modern films. This is my way of acknowledging and celebrating that,” she says.

Shivani has completed her BMM from KC College and first came up with her idea when she saw a separate category on Netflix which said 'Featuring a Strong Female Lead'. This prompted her to embark on her project last month, and Gorle has so far uploaded around 16 illustrations on social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. Geet from Jab We Met, Shashi from English Vinglish, Hermione from Harry Potter are all featured with their iconic dialogue in a circular frame.

Currently, focusing only on Bollywood and Hollywood films, she plans to include Indian regional and even world cinema. This may require some time, since watching the film to find the perfect image and dialogue is very important to her before she digitally recaptures it. “I aim to make this initiative cross-cultural, attracting all sorts of audiences. I want men, women, boys and girls to know that there are strong women who have been archived in art forever,” Gorle says, adding that her personal favourites are the female leads in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and Queen.

After increasing the number of illustrations, she also plans to create merchandise such as T-shirts, canvas bags, notebooks, etc featuring her work. While Shivani now has the time to devote to this endeavour, she hopes she'll continue to do so even once she leaves for her masters in New York next month.
