The typical lazy-girl hairstyle, which was once reserved for casual dos, is now being given a high-fashion makeover
For her first official engagement for the year, Meghan Markle made heads turn with her choice of updo. The soon-to-be royal appeared to be breaking protocol by sporting a knotted chignon, with a few loose strands framing her face. While the relaxed updo makes her more relatable to the public, it’s a far cry from the blow-dried and perfectly coiffed mane her sister-in-law Kate Middleton sports. The messy bun is having a moment. Kaia Gerber rocked the messy top knot for Chanel’s Fall 2018 collection at Paris Fashion Week where the humble bun was given a glam touch with added style and volume. At the Red Sparrow premiere, Jennifer Lawrence wore her blonde locks in a pulled-back bun letting her smokey eyes and red lips do the talking. Tracee Ellis Ross, too, went the same route at the Vanity Fair Oscar Party. So what makes this gym-girl look such a red carpet favourite?
Add some oomph
This hairstyle is versatile enough to be worn for running errands, grabbing a quick coffee, or even an evening soiree. It all depends on how you wear it. Clint Fernandes, make-up and hair expert explains this is a comeback style of the late ’90s and mid-2000s. “Textured hair pulled up in a bun seems glam with the appropriate make-up and garments. If you wear it with a gown, it automatically seems dressed up. In fact, Deepika Padukone had nailed it at last year’s Cannes Film Festival,” he says, adding, “It’s fairly easy to replicate. Pull your hair back in a ponytail, finger comb or backcomb the top and then tuck the rest around a sponge donut. This should be more centred or towards the back of the head and pinch out a few wisps of hair. Another option is to tong the tresses prior to styling.”
Messy gets trendy
Najeeb Ur Rehman, PPS director, Schwarzkopf Professional, Henkel Beauty Care India observes this season, messy hairstyling is a rage as anyone can wear it without much ado. “It works pretty much for all face types. Those with round and square faces can create volume on top, for long and heart-shaped faces, volume on sides with the help of braids and loose twisting works very well. Avoid brushing or combing your hair, instead use your fingers (finger combing) to recreate it,” he adds.
Quick and easy
If you’re opting for a messy top knot ala Shay Mitchell at the CFDA Luncheon, make use of several bobby pins to hold the style in place. Amelia Daswani, celebrity make-up and hairstyle expert and owner London Blow Dry Bar, feels this is a great way for the modern woman to look trendy without spending so much time on her appearance. “You can use some accessories like small decorative hair clips, bling gem-studded hairpins, decorative flowers etc to enhance the bun, as long as it appears delicate and classy. Also, you can keep the tresses neater on top but go messy with the bottom.”
The best part about the messy bun is that one doesn’t need clean locks to rock the style. In fact, it works well with second or third-day strands. Anisha Fernandes Tavares, senior stylist and make-up artist from Nalini of Nalini & Yasmin Salon, suggests, “To have better control and volume in the hair, add some mousse on your lengths. It works best on unwashed hair as it gives you the right texture for a messy look. To make it more elegant, use a flat brush to smoothen the tresses before the tie up. Let some loose hair fall out and apply a shine spray for some neatness. The beauty of a messy bun is that it can be casual yet elegant.”
