Kerala fair in Mumbai draws big turn out

: The cultural and trade fair of Kerala, which began earlier this month at CIDCO Urban Haat at Belapur in Navi Mumbai, will conclude tomorrow with a stage show on 60 years of the state, after luring a large number of visitors to the event which showcased the best of the state's art, craft,culture and cuisine.

"The response to the show has been quite encouraging.

Not only Malayalis but people belonging to all parts of the country residing in the megapolis turned up in the last nine days", an Information Officer of Kerala Government said.

The show, organised by state Information and Public Relations Department with the support of Mumbai Malayali associations, was inaugurated by Kerala Labour and Excise Minister T P Ramakrishnan on Janurary 20.

A wide range of artifacts and souvenirs like replicas of Kathakali mask, snake boat (chundan vallam),off-white handloom textiles, traditional delicacies and fritters were on sale at the fair.

Apart from food stalls of women selfhelp network "Kudumbashree", the exhibition also had outlets selling spices, coconut-based sweets and coir products.

The book stalls set up by some leading publishers from Kerala also received good response from the visitors, the organisers said.

Apart from stage programmes, performed by troupes from Kerala as well as members of Malayali associations, competitions for school children in writing and drawing were also held.

This is the second edition of the event held in the Mumbai suburb, seeking to give a hands on feeling of the rich culture and traditions of Kerala to all sections of people in the metro and its adjoining areas.
