The most confident person often loses his/her composure in front of someone they have fancied. Being tongue tied is pretty common. Spouting gibberish when one would like to be eloquently poetic is another sign of what an interaction with a crush can do with mere mortals. And it’s not just the ordinary folk out there even literary characters have fallen prey to it. As in the case of the main character from the novel The Great Gatsby. So much so that this new dating trend has been coined after him. A Reddit user named Cupcake-Warrior went on to explain Gatsbying as the modern day equivalent to Gatsby throwing elaborate parties seeking Daisy’s attention. It involves posting a picture or a Snapchat to your story and then waiting for that one specific person to watch it. The idea is to provide an opportunity for your crush to interact with you. However, given how subtle the platform is, can it really work for you? We asked singles for their reactions.

‘A subtle way to approach your crush’

Darshan Shah, aspiring actor

I had a crush on a girl from Mumbai, and she had shared a post on the difference between Delhi and Mumbai. I took the opportunity to express my love for the capital and to have a healthy debate with her. Consequently, I also happened to move from Delhi to Mumbai. We became good friends and even dated each other for a while. At the time I was not aware of Gatsbying as a dating term, but I would say it’s a good way to approach someone you are interested in.”

‘Giving a spin to Gatsbying’

Aparna Hajirnis, media professional

I am interested in this guy, and he also knows that I like him. And I plan to take things a step ahead with the help of social media. I plan to share one shayari and one mushy song on Twitter and hope to catch his attention. It’s not Gatsbying in the way it’s described but I think it adheres to what it stands for.

‘Subtle way to approach a crush’

Pradnya, an analyst in a financial firm

I am wary of social media, so I am careful about things I post or share online. Gatsbying as a dating trend can definitely get the attention of a crush, who you are reluctant to approach directly. It’s like an invite you send out to a party. It may or may not be accepted but it’s just a more subtle way to approach a crush.

Just like a lighthouse that shows the way to lost souls at sea, and is a symbol of hope, Gatsbying functions as that ray of hope in the life of singles who use social media posts as an indirect way to approach their crush. It’s most likely to be used by the socially awkward, but you cannot rule out the potential it has in atleast becoming a conversation starter that may or may not lead to a serious relationship.
