Make-up is all about experimenting and playing around with different looks. And while eye make-up has mostly placed emphasis on the lid, now women are having fun experimenting with looks that highlight the lower eye. Kim Kardashian West was recently spotted flaunting a reverse smoky eye. Shay Mitchell too likes  to use colour liner to accentuate her beautiful eyes. As did Olivia Culpo at the recent Emmy Awards. The idea being to keep the lid subtle and go bold and dramatic with the lower eye. It has been seen on the runways too with coloured liners as well as glitter.

Suits certain eye types
The upside down eye make-up trend is not new, and has been done by make-up artists since a long time, explains Clint Fernandes, make-up expert. He says it’s just caught the attention of the masses recently through social media. “Indian women particularly have been known to use kajal pencils. Even surma used by Muslim men and women is applied in a similar way to the lower lid only. This looks really nice if you play with different coloured pencils on the lower lash line, use a black liner for the waterline and oodles of mascara. One can also do a reverse cat eye with the pointed end in the inner corner of the eye and extending outwards as well, this looks great on almond shaped eyes,” he says.
There are a few points one needs to keep in mind before trying out this trend. Avoid copying the upside down eye trend if you have droopy or deep set eyes. The make-up can smudge easily and won’t stay in place. Also, this look will emphasise any undereye bags or wrinkles. “The undereye area needs to be matt as it could cause bleeding of the make-up. With the heat and humidity in India, this trend can be tricky to ace. Prep by using an eye cream first, followed by a primer and then a concealer if needed. Then play around with your make-up. Colour-blocking with liners is a good option,” adds Clint.

Brightens the face
This trend is popular for spring/summer when one opts for minimalistic looks. Bare and slight sheen on the eyelid is complemented with a pop of colour or glitter on the lower lid. Aakriti Kochar, make-up and beauty expert, Oriflame says, “A colour pop eyeliner on the lower lid works well for small eyes, and even for tired eyes. It quickly lifts them and brightens up the entire look of the face. Coloured eyeliner with nude, taupe, beige eye shadow works best for the day time. For evenings, one can add neutral gold, copper, rose gold eye shadows on the eye lid and add eyeliner shades like teal, blue, to the bottom rim. The sparkle makes it suitable if you like shimmer, and works well for evenings and specially with Indian wear during festivities. If opting for glitter eyeliners, make sure to keep rest of the face very basic, a hint of eyeliner on the top lid maybe and volumised lashes with mascara or false eye lashes.” She adds one should use pencil, crayon or gel based eye liners on the lower rim. Liquid eyeliners are not advisable in this case. Use these pencils generously to enhance and build colour and make sure it is water resistant. To smudge the eyeliner on the lower lid, use the same colour eye shadow on a small brush and rub it on top. This builds up colour and gives a smokey smouldering look to the eyes, also making sure it stays intact.
