Customs foil five bids of gold smuggling at int'l airport

The Air Intelligence Unit today seized over 2 kg gold worth Rs 65 lakh at the international airport here in five separate incidents of smuggling.

Four out of five carriers had concealed the yellow metal in their rectums.

The AIU officials intercepted Ibrahim Mohamed, who arrived from Dubai, and found him carrying five gold bars weighing 583 grams in his rectum. The value of the bars is Rs 16.90 lakh, an official said.

In another incident, the sleuths found that Manoj Watwani (24), who arrived from Baharin, has hidden two gold bars weighing 232 grams in his anal cavity. The bars are valued at Rs 6.62 lakh.

Deepak Khiani (25) and Riyaz Memon, who had arrived from Bangkok and Dubai, respectively, were also found to be hiding gold in similar fashion.

While Khiani was carrying cut pieces of gold, weighing 300 gms, Memon has hidden two gold bars weighing 232 gms.

The value of the gold pieces is estimated at Rs 8.78 lakh, and that of the gold bars at Rs 6.93 lakh.

"Such passengers are convinced for prompt removal (of foreign bodies). Delayed removal of rectal foreign bodies can lead to severe complications including abdominal, rectal pains associated with bleeding and infections," an official said.

The Customs also seized 900 gm gold worth Rs 26 lakh from one Mayur Khevani who had concealed it under his trouser.
