How to balance polished with preppy and volume with structure this season...

If you thought a basic black suit will suffice this party season then you’re off the mark. If it’s the tuxedo look you’re aiming for, opt for one with either a peak or shawl lapel (never notch) with grosgrain or satin facing which matches with the stripe down the outer seam of the trousers. Also, take into account your physique: a slimmer lapel complements a skinny dude, whereas a broader man should stick to a wider lapel. And of course, the proportions of your lapel, shirt collar and bow tie all more or less match up.

Wear an elegant slim-line dress watch, ideally on a black leather strap which will complement your cufflinks. If you want to steer clear of black then midnight blue is a cool option for a champagne evening.

Ditch the black

Stylist Isha Bhansali suggests — either go for a pair of super cool socks or opt for a completely sock-less look. “There’s no in between. Choose more graphic patterns and clean blazers. Say goodbye to double breasted jackets. We are done with the 1920s for a while as we are on a strong affair with 80s and 90s. Bright browns, rust and greys are the colours of the season. So it’s a good time to ditch the blacks for a change and tone down the accessories. The cleaner the classier,” says she.

Keep weather in mind

Designer Kunal Rawal recommends denim jackets. “A kurta and a pair of breeches work well for an Indo-Western party look with a tonal tee and denims and radiates a clean street inspired party look. Complete your look with evening sneakers with nifty fabrication and finish. Perhaps more of off white/vanilla sneakers than the white ones,” says Kunal.

He observes that this season more about garment pattern and fit tweaks rather than fabric manipulation (fabric must be comfortable keeping our weather in mind). “I see a lot of graphics this season but smaller details and more exciting placements literally where they don’t belong. When styling an embroidered or graphic piece, keep rest clean or treat your embroidery like a solid and have the same embroidery on multiple garments in the same look. Bottom silhouettes are slimmer and hems shorter, a hint of ankle with low tops and bottoms,” Rawal adds.

The designer also adds that the oversized look is major this season and can work with most body types if the rest of the look is kept fitted and the volume controlled.

Be a Print Charming

Designer Paras Modi of label SVA says, “ From an evening soiree to a traditional wedding, print on print is your go-to attire. This is yet another experimental trend this season, for the man who doesn’t shy away from a little experiment. Opt for asymmetrical bandis teamed with sleek pants for an interesting silhouette. Keep an eye out for hues of brown, black and beige to add autumn hues to your outfit!”
