FM radio listeners in Rajasthan can now listen to news headlines in their local language.

The regional news unit of All India Radio (AIR), Jaipur, has started broadcasting FM news headlines in Rajasthani to promote the local language.

The broadcast began yesterday, regional news unit station director Sudhir Rakhecha said.

The news division also broadcasts a 10-minute bulletin at 6.50 pm in Rajasthani language.

The initiative was taken after Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting M Venkaiah Naidu asked officials to give importance to local languages.

"Naidu had given directions in this regard in a review meeting of Doordarshan and AIR in Jaipur. He desired that every regional news unit, in every state, should give importance to local languages in their bulletins and FM news headlines," joint director of the regional news unit O P Meena said.

The regional news unit of Jaipur AIR broadcasts six FM news headlines on Radio Pink city FM 100.3 MHz in Jaipur and five FM news headlines on Radio Sun City FM 102.1 MHz in Jodhpur every day.

It also airs four bulletins at 9 am, 12.30 pm, 6.30 pm in Hindi, and 6.50 pm in Rajasthani language.
