Of Butter Prawns and Father’s Day

Of Butter Prawns and Father’s Day
Kanika and her dad

My home is a strictly vegetarian one. The word ‘non-veg’ is forbidden. Mom cringes at the sight and smell of all things non-veg. I’ve never even tasted non-veg food, till one scrumptious bite of juicy Filet-O-Fish at McDonalds changed it all. From then on, being a vegetarian was no fun. My obsession for non-veg food grew, and I managed to binge on it whenever I could — at a friends’ house, movies and trips, except at home, of course. My gang of girls would order my favourite chicken tikka and butter chicken for me, without even asking.

This went on for quite some time; my parents were totally oblivious to my new food choices.

One day, my parents had to attend a function in Pune, so they left for a day trip. I had my tuitions and so I stayed back. Mom made some paneer for me which she categorically asked me to finish. I thought this was a godsend opportunity to order a sumptuous non-veg meal from Swiggy, which was also offering a discount. I ordered food, the doorbell rang and I ran to open the door. To my horror, I found dad standing at the door. I froze, and within seconds, the delivery guy also arrived. Dad was taken aback and inquired about the parcel. I confessed that it was chicken tikka and butter prawns. Dad told me that he had left his mobile charger. Thankfully, mom was waiting at the railway station. He grinned and asked me to enjoy my meal. He went on to confess that he too indulges in non-veg food outside. I gave him a tight hug with tears of joy. This has been our best kept secret. We are partners in crime!

Happy Father’s Day!
