How Beiber taught me business studies

No — a word we don’t like hearing, especially us teenagers. No for a new video game – err, fine. But, no for Justin Beiber concert —wrong move, parents!

However, we often find ways to do what we want, and when we want it. I will turn 15 in a matter of weeks, and I don’t even know what I’m going to eat for dinner, let alone what I am going to do in life. But I still know ways to get my dad to buy me things that I want, but not always need. Cunning, eh? Let me explain.

I study in an IGCSE school. So, when my Class 9 began, we could choose our subject combinations. I took Business Studies in addition to my regular subjects, and I was extremely excited. Perhaps, I would learn how to make money and become a young entrepreneur. But I was left with things like tax, profit, and loss stuck in my head. So, I did the next easiest thing. I dropped the subject and chose the familiar territory of Biology.  The academic year progressed, pretty much uneventfully.

One late February morning, as I sat in the corner of the class engrossed in my book, my friend came up to me with a question. The hottest topic of discussion doing the rounds — Justin Beiber. The fact that he finally knew that India existed on the world map made every single girl go nuts!

Coming back to the point, she asked me whether I had scored tickets to the concert, and I bluntly replied ‘Nope’. She continued to ask whether I would like to go and I thought about it for a few seconds and replied: “Nah, I’m good.” Well, not everyone is a Belieber. I mean he is just a regular guy trying to make good music.

According to me, what was the ‘purpose’ of paying around 75,000 bucks to meet a guy, if you don’t like his music and you are just going to see him because of your friends. And what about the fans who cannot afford it? Are only the privileged worthy of being fans?

Well, my friend gave me the ‘are you crazy look’ and walked away. I looked at the pin board, and I saw a Business Studies chart, and then it hit me. I would have liked to attend the Justin Beiber concert, but I don’t need it. Opportunity cost. The concert was my opportunity cost. My chosen option was being at home.

I’ve had quite a few life lessons come out of random moments. A ‘No’ doesn’t always have to be a bad idea. And on the brighter side, I convinced mom to redo my room instead. We teenagers think we know it all. Well, I do believe that too....sometimes. Maybe. The world ain’t perfect, right?
