In 1971, the Indian army abrogated Pakistan army which entered in Longewala border and this war was written in the Indian history as one of the greatest victories of Indian army. The Longewala War Memorial near the border established by the Indian Army as part of tribute to the martyred soldiers, has now become a centre of attraction for the tourists. 

The moment of valor and courage of Indian military officers and soldiers becomes fresh after seeing the demolished tanks of Pakistan. Tourists coming to this place feel proud of the victory of the Indian Army after seeing all the evidence, including the demolished tanks and jeeps of the Pak army.

In the midnight between December 4 and 5, 1971, 23rd battalion of the Punjab Regiment had dusted the Pak army, which infiltrated in Longewala village, fifteen km from the border with Jaisalmer.

It is worth mentioning that Major Kuldeep Singh Chandpuri, honoured with Mahavir Chakra, is the hero of the Battle of Longewala. Under his leadership the soldiers showed such bravery and courage that more than 179 Pakistani soldiers were killed and hundreds were injured. Not only this, the cannons of the Indian Army and the Hunter of the Air Force destroyed 37 Pakistani tanks.

The army has prepared this war site to restore the moments of heroism and courage. People come here to give tribute to the legends of Longewala .The idols of those soldiers are placed there, whose supreme sacrifice led to victory in the Battle of Longewala. The Longewala war has been displayed in this war memorial. Chandpuri, acts of bunkers, destroying Pakistani vehicles and tanks, Indian Army celebrating victory, the place where they danced, RCL guns and arms are placed on display.

It is because of this historic battle that Longewala War Memorial Museum and Longewala War Memorial in Jaisalmer both are included amongst the world’s tourist spots. Jaisalmer’s Longewala Museum is in Asia’s top twenty museums and one of the five major museums in India as per the rating of Trip Adviser and is attracting large number of tourists.
