When a mob went on rampage in support of slain gangster Anandpal Singh at his village on Wednesday, a trainee officer of the Indian Police Service (IPS) went through a horrifying ordeal that even her rigorous training may not have prepared her for.

It was, however, womenfolk who not only came to the officer’s rescue, but also warned the irate mob that had come after her to step back.

Home minister Gulab Chand Kataria, on Thursday, admitted that the irate mob that badgered cops and resorted to arson had molested trainee IPS officer and ASP (Ajmer) Monika Sain who was deployed at Sanwarad (Nagaur).

Accoridng to reports, Sain was attacked by the agitated members of Rajput community when she was engaged in crowd control towards the end of the condolence meet at his village Sanwrad.

“Sain was manhandled by the protesters. She managed to escape and was given shelter inside a house nearby after some locals decided to help her,” home minister Gulab Chand Kataria told DNA. He said a decision on medical examination of the officer can be conducted after consulting Nagaur SP who was brutally beaten up by the mob.

According to sources, Sain was fiercely protected by her gunman who prevented the mob from attacking her, an official said. They, however, beat up the gunman and reportedly grabbed the officer, who, however, managed to escape their clutches and fled the scene.

“Sain took shelter in a house near Sanwrad railway station from where she was recovered by the police one and a half hour later,” an official said.

She was allegedly running from the attacking mob when the women in the house came out and took her in. “The mob came after her shortly, but all the women came out of the house and dared the community members to touch her,” an official said. It was only after the mob backed off that the women sent a message to the police to have their colleague picked up. “There message was, she is safe, but come and get her soon,” the official added.

The home minister blamed Rajput community leaders for provoking the crowd with their speeches from the stage. “There was no confrontation (between gathering and police) while the leaders on the stage were engaged in giving inflammatory speeches. In the evening when DG Jail Ajeet Singh was holding talks with kin of Anandpal on his cremation, there were calls from stage to set vehicles and the railway station on fire,” Kataria stated.
