Three get life term in sensational Jeevan Godara murder case

After a trial that went on for 12 years, ADJ Court Deedwana, in Nagaur district, on Monday awarded life sentence to three found guilty in the famous Jeevan Godara murder case. The three accused who got life sentence are Sanjay Pandey, Datar Singh and Shrivallabh. One accused Pappu alias Pappya was sentenced to five years of imprisonment.

Of the total 23 accused in the case, four were found guilty and sentenced while 11 were acquitted due to lack of evidence. Three are dead and two are absconding. Trial of two accused is being conducted separately.

Of the 11 who have been acquitted is Manjit Singh, brother of Anandpal Singh. One of the sentenced Shrivallabh had escaped police custody along with Anandpal Singh in 2015.

The main accused Anandpal Singh was subsequently killed in a police encounter in June 2017. Another accused Balbir Banuda was killed in a gang war in Bikaner Central jail. Yet another accused Kaluram is also dead. Two accused Shahid and Anil Nayar had been declared absconders by the court. One of the accused Bhanwar Singh Makodi has been acquitted earlier by the court. Trial of Suresh Singh Anoop Singh is being conducted separately.

There were total 116 witnesses in the case including Pramod, Pappuram and Shrigopal who were injured in the firing that killed Jeevan Godara.   

On February 28, ADJ Pradeep Kumar Modi found three guilty of murder, while the fourth was found guilty of destroying evidence. The court on Monday announced the sentence. A fine of Rs 50,000 has also been imposed on the three convicts.

The entire court premises had been turned into a fortress with armed policemen deployed in large numbers to check any untoward incident when the accused were brought to the court for the sentence.

According to special public prosecutor Rameshwar Bhakar, they would go in for appeal in higher court against the acquittal of 11. On the other hand, counsel for defence Jayveer Singh said they too would move higher court against the judgement. Singh expressed hope that the four who have been implicated in the case would be exonerated. Meanwhile an application has been filed in the court by Pappu for the suspension of the of his sentence.

Slain gangster Anandpal Singh had shot to fame with this murder that took place in 2006. Jeevan Godara and Harfool Jat were killed in broad daylight in the marketplace by assailants said to be associated with Anandpal Singh. Three others had been injured in the firing.
