Customs department has filed 408 page chargesheet against a gang of sandalwood smugglers.

The Jaipur branch of DRI had received tip off that Alwar Refectories Private Limited (ARPL) in Matsya industrial area is involved in smuggling of red sandalwood instead of refectory bricks.

The DRI official reached Mundra Port where they checked a container ready to be uploaded on a Dubai bound ship. When the container was opened 5200 refectory bricks were less as disclosed in the documents. Instead there were 478 logs of red sandalwood weighing 11460 kg.

DRI seized the sandalwood followed by raids on factory premises, homes and offices of the company directors and freight forwarding agent Worldwide Logistics. The DRI found that the company had already sent a container of sandalwood in the past applying same trick.

The DRI investigation revealed that sandalwood smugglers from Tamil Nadu have zeroed in on Rajasthan as it was deemed safe. Their representative projected himself as Satish agent of the buyers and used the ARPL by facilitating export orders for bricks from Singapore and Dubai firms.

As per documents submitted in the court, on the way from Alwar to Jaipur, seal of the container was broken to replace bricks with sandalwood.

When the DRI raided a godown near Ramgarh Mod, it found 6112 refectory bricks weighing 25.22mt and 644 logs of illegal sandalwood worth Rs 1.69 crore.

The godown had been rented to Umesh Kumar alias Jag Narayan of Basti district in UP but his ID documents were found to be fake. Even Delhi and Kolkata mobile numbers of Satish were fake.  The DRI has not been able to trace Umesh or Satish even after six ‘Charge sheet was filed after completion of customs investigation in economic offence court. Hopefully, the guilty would get punishment,” Banwari Lal Takhar, special public prosecutor, customs department.
