Sports minister Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore, during a surprise visit to city’s Vidhyadhar Nagar Stadium on Friday, was shocked to witness the lack of facilities and mismanagement at the stadium. What miffed the minister further was when he found one coach without any detail of coaching schedule with him. Later, Rathore speaking to media, said that the coaches have the details of the schedules and other details relating to coaching with them, but they were missing in this case. He went around the stadium and also found that there was no washroom for women even though he could spot female players practicing in the stadium.

“ There was no ladies toilets. They should be built as soon as possible,” Rathore pointed out. He also found that the synthetic track made for the stadium was also missing. Rathore said that two things are most important for sports infrastructure - first the availability of resources and second the passion. However, he said he found passion missing at the stadium. He added that he had sought the details of the MoU between the ministry of sports and Rajasthan state sports council and after that, a decision regarding improvement will be taken. He added that such environment (shabby conditions) won’t be permitted. The only positive of his visit was that the minister was happy to find a lot of women, especially married, practicing. “Hats off to their fire and spirit,” he said. He later posted tweets and pictures about the surprise visit, expressing his displeasure over the conditions.

In what could be a departure from the traditional way of developing sports infrastructure in the country, five stadiums in Delhi will be given to private players for operations. The information was disclosed by Union minister of state for sports (Independent charge), Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore on Friday. During the promotion of MUDRA scheme of the Union government, Rathore took out some time to discuss issues related to sports. He said that sports is included under the list of fields wherein the funds of CSR can be utilized and therefore, it has been decided that five stadiums will be operated by using of CSR funds.

With an aim to identify promising players of the country and to pick them up from grass root level i.e the schools, National Khelo India school games will be organized in December this year. Giving the information, Union minister Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore said that the sporting heroes should be pushed in national games and to go forward with this idea, the National Khelo India school games are being organised. 16 games have been shortlisted that would be held in this event, said Rathore. Of these, four games are team games while rest are individual category games. Importantly, 1000 players will be selected in this championship and they will be given Rs 5 lakh for 8 years. Which means that if a player of age 17 is selected, then till the time he reaches the age of 25, he will keep on getting Rs 5 lakhs each year.
