Rajasthan cities make it big in ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao’

The desert state is in bloom. Rajasthan’s Jhubjhunu and Sikar infamous for female foeticide and infanticide and child marriages is now saving its girls and their numbers are growing. The skewed sex ratio tilted towards boys is a thing of past in these districts who were at the bottom in the country prior to the launch of ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao’ campaign. In two years, there is a remarkable change in their standing in saving and protecting girl child. A testimony of this positive change is a national award that Prime Minister Narendra Modi would present them on his visit to Jhunjhunu on March 8.

In fact, Jhunjhunu has become the first district two receive the national award under ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao’ mission for the second time. Union ministry for women and child development has recently announced names of 12 districts including Jhunjhunu and Sikar that would receive the prize.

There were 837 women per 1000 men in Jhunjhunu in census 2011. At the end of the first year of the mission, the transformation was surprisingly going up to 903, which went up further to 952.

In Sikar, it was 848 women per 1000 men. At the end of the first year, the ratio shot up to 923 and now stands at 963.
