Call it declining interest or increasing competition that 66 groups of country liquor and three shops of IMFL and beer in Jaipur have not shown interest in getting their liquor license renewed. Not only Jaipur, but in many other districts across the state, a lot of shops have been left without renewal. Apart from Jaipur city, 9 shops in Hanumangarh, 2 each in Jodhpur and Sriganganagar and 3 in Nagaur have not applied for licence renewal for IMFL and beer.

The list of shops not renewing the licence in case of country liquor is more across the state. In Jaipur itself, 66 groups in city limits and 38 groups in rural Jaipur have not got their licence renewed while a maximum of 211 groups of country liquor shops in Sriganganagar and 181 groups of country liquor shops in Ajmer have not renewed their licence.

As such, now these vacant shops will be given afresh by lottery. It has been decided that the fresh date for giving application for these left out shops will be February 26 while the lottery will be taken out on February on 27.

Notably, it was decided in the excise policy of the financial year 2017-18 that there will be 1000 shops of IMFL and beer in city limits across the state. While in case of country liquor, there are 6640 shops in 5619 groups. Sources informed that increased competition in country liquor and awareness among the people towards the ill effects of liquor is one of the main reason for nonrenewal.

The policy had stated that there won’t be a new policy for 2018-19. For IMFL and beer, the licence fee has been increased by 10% while for country liquor, licence fee has been increased by 15 %. The licence fee for Bhang shops has been shot up by 6 %. After paying the licence fees the shops’ license will be renewed. It was declared last year that it will be a combined excise policy for the financial year 2017-18 and 2018-19. As such, it was informed that licence will be renewed after paying revised fees.
