For tourists, Bikaner's Camel Festival adds heritage walk charm

Even as tourists throng to Bikaner round the year, in two days, the city will host another edition of the Camel Festival that includes events like camel races, camel milking and fur cutting and designing. The event is a highlight of the calendar that is organised by the state Department of Tourism.

The Camel Festival in Bikaner is an annual fair dedicated to the ship of the desert wherein they are beautifully bedecked and make for a colourful spectacle. At the same time, the event also caters to those with a interesting palate and enjoy souvenir-shopping and photography. Other sights to watch out for include folk dancers, fire dancers and the spectacular fireworks show that lights up the night sky.

"This year, there will be a heritage walk, which is a new feature. Apart from this, camel dance is an attraction for which tourists come here," said Pushpendra Singh ATO, Rajasthan Tourist Centre.

The first day of the festival will begin with Camel Rides and Camel Safaris at the Gram Raisar (15 km from Bikaner City), followed by the Shobhayatra from Junagarh to Dr Karni Singh Stadium. There, the annual inaugural ceremony will include performances by the Bagpiper Army Band. On the occasion, competitions like Camel decoration, Camel Fur Cutting, Camel Dance, Miss Marwan and Mr Bikaner competitions will also take place. The day will conclude with cultural performances by Rajasthani Artistes.

The concluding day (14 January) will begin with the new Heritage Walk from Rampura Haveli to Bikaji Ki Tekri. An exhibition match of kabaddi will also take place. This will be followed by the prize distribution ceremony and performances by Rajasthani artistes. The fireworks at the end of the day will mark the conclusion of the festival.
