The political tussle between Congress and Bhartiya Janata Party over the issue of unjustified increase in fees by private schools went further uphill on Wednesday. Vasudev Devnani, minister, Education (Primary & Secondary), clarified that the state government is against the unjustified fee hike. This came as a response to prolonged agitation by parents, as well as, a statewide campaign by the opposition, against the unreasonable rise in the fees.

City-based private schools have increased their fees by as much as 50 per cent for the coming session, which has agitated the parents as they feel the amount is unjustified. In addition to this, they also allege that the schools are not following the laws under Rajasthan Schools (Regulation of Fee) Act, 2016.

Devnani, however, stated that instructions have been given to all District Education Officers to ensure proper implementation of the act. “School Fees Committees have been setup in all 26,000 schools of the state. The committees also have parents in addition to the administration as the members. We assure the guardians that action will definitely be taken on any complaint filed against any school charging unjustified fees,” Devnani said. He further explained that the Central Board of Secondary Education has joined hands with the state government to handle the ongoing issue of fee hike and implementation of private books.

“The schools cannot put pressure on the parents to purchase books and essentials from one particular shop. If a complaint is filed regarding the same, action will definitely be taken,” he clarified. Devnani, hit the opposition’s accusations regarding the implementation of the law by stating that Congress is only making it a political issue and actually does not have any interest in addressing the cause. “The party had not done anything regarding the unruly increase in fees during their tenure. Rajasthan is the first state to implement an act on the fee hike in 2016,” the minister said.
