Vaishali Nagar police arrested two men on Wednesday who have confessed to committing over three dozen chain snatchings in the city. The cops have even recovered one country made pistol and live rounds from their possession. Interestingly, one of them was earlier arrested by the Anti Terrorism Squad while transporting Rs 19 lakh in cash during the demonitisation drive. “In the past three months, the incidents of chain snatchings had increased in the area. To counter this, a special team was formed which was tasked with taking tough actions. The team started gathering inputs on miscreants.
They also collated footages from CCTVs and followed the same minutely,” said Ashok Gupta, DCP West. Following the inputs and the footage it was clear that these youths were using power bikes to commit these crimes. The cops also realised that these “smart” boys had crossed the lines with cops, however since the cops did not have such mean machines, the miscreants could escape easily,” the DCP informed.
Realising this to be a major hindrance in fighting crime, station house officer of Vaishaliu Nagar police station Bhupal Singh procured three power bikes. “The cops were trained to handle these sophisticated hot wheels. On Wednesday, as the duo were spotted in Vaishali Nagar area, constables Mahipal and Ranveer identified them and gave them a chase. The chain snatchers entered the main market with a view to commit a snatching but the constables “over powered” them,” the DCP informed. The duo were identified as Omprakash Kumawat and Ram Karan Kumawat.
