Rajasthan’s border district Jaisalmer is witnessing a sharp increase in religious places along the international border by a particular community. These illegal constructions are allegedly posing threat to national security. Both, the Border Security Force (BSF) and Simajan Kalyan Samiti (SKS) have expressed concerns about mushrooming illegal religious structures in sensitive area like Sam. The BSF reportedly raised the matter a few days ago during meeting of leading intelligence agencies and informed district collector as well. The BSF specially pointed out a huge religious place in Shahgarh bulge just three km away from the international border with Pakistan where thousands of people assemble every year with possibility of smugglers and anti-nationals being part of the congregation.

According to sources, the BSF officials informed about the modus operandi in which government land is encroached upon by fencing the area followed by stone pelting at vehicles passing through that area and finally construction begins and board is put up. The religious building in Shahgarh came up like this where every three or four months thousands of people come with their vehicles passing through BSF gates, which according to security agencies poses great threat to national security.

Simajan Kalyan Samiti has also written to chief minister about construction of religious structures as mass level in the border areas. District secretary Sharad Vyas said that religious structures are coming up illegally in revenue and non-revenue villages. Since, there has been increase in infiltration, spying and other anti-national activities in border areas with 52 spies being arrested in less than two years; a request has been made for implementation of laws and various proposals to check such activities. “These constructions are against the basic spirit of state religious place act,” he said.

According to Vyas, a particular community is bringing up an illegal religious structure in Mandhala village under Harnau panchayat.

District collector K C Meena said that no permission was sought for the construction, which was against the rules, therefore, the restriction order on construction was issued. “We have also come to know that MNREGA funds were used for the construction of a religious structure whereas the sanction was taken for boundary wall of a cemetery.  The matter is being investigated and action will be taken against guilty,” the district collector said.
