Bharat Bandh: 5 cops, several protesters injured in Jodhpur

Jodhpur was crippled during the Bharat bandh called by Dalit organisations to protest against changes in the SC-ST Act.

Bandh supporters forcibly closed shops, vehicles, markets, and schools. Incidents of stone pelting, arson and stabbing traders took place at many places. The miscreants even blocked railway tracks.

The situation went out of control and the police had to resort to lathi charge several times and used teargas to control the situation. Five policemen and several protesters were injured. One sub-inspector is in a critical condition. 

The protesters were equipped with batons, iron bars, baseball sticks and hockey. They openly waved the weapons and went to shut the markets in the form of groups.     

The whole city remained hostage to the hooligans for about five hours. Students who went to schools and colleges remained there till the situation returned to normal. Commuters had to wait for several hours to catch a bus or train. 

Workers from organizations, including Dr Ambedkar Samajik Kalyan Sansthan, Jai Bhim Yuva Sangh, Dalit Mazdoor Mukti Morcha and All-India Federation of SC-ST Organization started gathering in the morning and reached Jalori Gate. By 10 o’clock, thousands of people belonging to the Dalit class assembled there.

There have been clashes in many places due to the forcibly closure of the shops. Police remained mute everywhere. The movement became more violent in the afternoon. There was an incident of stone pelting which forcibly shut down the shops in the Paota area and many people were injured. The police had to use the tear gas to disperse the crowd. Bandh supporters carried out many violent acts.

The railway wall was broken due construction work near the foot over bridge near the information center on the High Court Road.

Bandh supporters crossed the railway line from here and stopped a Jaisalmer passenger rail from there. They climbed on the engine of the rail and also captured the railway track. From here they reached Raika Bagh railway station and started creating a ruckus there.
