Jubilant over the results of Presidential election, the Bharatiya janata Party (BJP) in Rajasthan had an added reason to celebrate as they got more votes than their tally of members at state Assembly.

The President-elect, Ram Nath Kovind received votes of 166 MLAs from Rajasthan even as the BJP has only 162 MLAs, though it fell little short of BJP’s target of 171. However, amid the victory chorus, this shortfall does not seem to bother the BJP.

“The issue of cross voting is irrelevant today,” said chief minister Vasundhara Raje. “Today all those who voted in favour deserve to be thanked,” she said.

BJP had counted on the support of four MLAs from National Peoples Party, two of Zamidara and three Independent candidates. As none of the votes from state got cancelled it was apparent that a few of these had not voted as assured earlier.

Meanwhile the Opposition Congress maintained that it was not the outside votes that had swung away. As per Congress it was the discontented lot within the state BJP that voted against the party line.

Congress holds mere 24 seats but their supported candidate was able to get votes of 34 MLAs.

“The very fact that a few of the BJP MLAs without any pressure or pursuance voted for the candidate of Opposition parties show that they are not contended with policies and works of the government,” said president of Pradesh Congress Committee, Sachin Pilot.

“It is also a time for introspection for BJP,” he added.

Pilot on this occasion also congratulated Ram Nath Kovind on his victory and said that the Opposition’s candidate contested for sake of democratic values.
