Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath pinned the blame on overconfidence of his party workers for the losses in bye-elections in the Gorakhpur and Phulpur Lok Sabha constituencies in his state but said they will make up by winning all 80 seats in 2019.

Speaking from Lucknow through video conferencing during the Zee India Conclave in the Capital on Saturday, Adityanath said the bypoll loss has taught the party some lessons and it has dented his image to some extent.

"Every time I asked party workers what the ground situation was they said we are winning and there is no need to worry. Overconfidence and inability to assess the ground realities during the last few days of campaigning turned the things against us in Gorakhpur and Phulpur Lok Sabha bypolls. "He said the bye-elections were fought on local issues but that won't be the situation in next year's Lok Sabha polls as national issues will be in the forefront.

Speaking on the alliance between Samajwadi Party and Bahujan Samaj Party that have traditionally been bitter rivals, Adityanath called it a compromise deal and said the people of Uttar Pradesh will not compromise on development and the rule of law by accepting the alliance in the longer run. "This will crumble before it can come up. They have to decide who their leader will be and their seat-sharing arrangement before the elections," he added.

When asked about the caste calculation that could have gone wrong as BSP-SP came together, he said the entire society is a voter for BJP and not restricted and divided by caste.

He rejected the clamour on Ram temple issue in Ayodhya saying nobody is interested in old sloganeering. "We are looking for a peaceful solution and everybody needs to wait patiently." Answering a question on whether the old myth of CM visiting Noida is unlucky and his recent trip to the city was a bad omen ahead of the bye-elections, Adityanath said he does not believe in these things. "There is nothing like unlucky. We have come to power to get rid of all wrongs."
