A local court has sentenced accused rapist Deepak Kumar to seven years imprisonment for raping a 21- year-old Dalit woman last year in Muzaffarnagar on August 30.
Police had registered a case of gangrape against the accused and another co-accused named Praveen Saini and charge-sheeted them. The victim alleged that she was raped by both youths in her statement made before the magistrate.
Additional District Sessions Judge DK Garg imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on the accused, holding him guilty under section 376 (rape) of the IPC, while Saini was acquitted due to lack of evidence.
According to Mujammil Haider, Assistant District Government Council, the victim had gone to relieve herself when the 2 accused youths, Deepak and Praveen, came and picked her up and took her to a nearby place, where she was raped at Haiderpur village in the Charthawal area in the district on January 15, 2013.
