The Army opened fire on stone pelting mob on Friday in central Kashmir leaving a youth dead and injuring another in the former chief minister Omar Abdullah's assembly constituency of Beerwah in the Budgam district.

While police claimed that the Army mistook hurling of fire cracker as grenade and opened fire, the Army said they fired after stone throwers tried to snatch weapons from troops in Kondur village near Beerwah.

Two persons — Tanveer Ahmed and Mohammed Ibrahim — were injured in the firing. The injured were immediately shifted to a hospital where Tanveer succumbed to his injuries. According to police said Ibrahim's condition is stable.

"As per initial information a foot patrol of the Army was returning to its camp when some miscreants pelted stones on them. One of them also hurled a fire cracker at the army men. The soldiers thought a grenade was hurled and retaliated," a police officer said.

Colonel Rajesh Kalia, defence spokesman at Srinagar, said, "An Army patrol was subjected to stone pelting by a mob in Kondur village. Some stone-pelters tried to close in on the patrol and snatch weapons from the soldiers."

Tension has gripped the area after the killing. Thousands of people joined the funeral prayers of the slain youth shouting pro-freedom slogans.

Clashes erupted after the funeral with scores of youth pelting stones on the security forces. Security forces took to lathi charge and fired smoke shells to quell the mob.

National Conference president and former J&K chief minister Omar Abdullah said, "My heart goes out to the family of young Tanveer. The cycle of death and despair has consumed the youth, and this cycle must be broken with peace, resolution, and reconciliation."

Hurriyat hawk Syed Ali Shah Geelani said, "Unless and until these forces are made accountable for their wrongdoings the killing spree will go unabated."
