A special court in Korba district in Chhattisgarh has sentenced a 22-year-old man to life imprisonment for raping a minor girl on the pretext of marrying her.

Special judge under the SC and ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act Vijay Kumar Ekka yesterday awarded life imprisonment to Narsingh Vaishnav in the case, Special Public Prosecutor Ramesh Singh Yadav said today.

On May 31, 2014, Vaishnav, a resident of Kartala police station area, kidnapped the girl, who lived in the same locality. He then took her towards Pathalgaon in the neighbouring Raigarh district, where he raped her after making a false promise of marrying her, Yadav added.

The relatives of the girl had lodged a complaint regarding her abduction in June, 2014.

Subsequently, the accused was arrested by the police and the victim was freed from his captivity, Yadav said.

The accused was booked for rape and abduction under the IPC. Provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO) were also slapped on him, Yadav added.

After recording the statement of the victim and 13 others in the case, the accused was convicted yesterday, the Special Public Prosecutor said.
