'Women are gateway to hell': Baba Virendra Dev Dixit's lawyer's shocking comment in Delhi HC

The Delhi High Court on Monday sternly pulled up a lawyer for making a demeaning remark about women when he said ‘nari narak ka dwar hai’, roughly translated to ‘women are the gateway to hell’.

According to report by Times Now, the lawyer made the remark while representing  Delhi-based self-professed godman Virendra Dev Dixit who is facing a CBI probe for confining women and girls.

Lawyer Amol Kokane was warned by the bench of Acting Chief Justice Gita Mittal and Justice C Hari Shankar that his argument would invite contempt of court action.

The lawyer said in court, “...according to Sankaracharya, ‘nari narak ka dwar hai’ (women are the gateway to hell).”

When the anguished bench asked him which Sankarcharya he was referring to, leaving the lawyer tongue tied. He reportedly made the remark when asked by the court why women and girls were being left by their parents at the ashrams of Adhyatmik Vishwa Vidyalaya founded by Virendra Dev Dixit.

 Delhi government’s lawyer Rahul Mehra, also expressed his displeasure with the arguments by Kokane who quested if Kokane was even an advocate and demanded that his registration with the bar be examined.

After furore over the remark, the court concluded for the day, and asked everyone to immediately left the courtroom. The Adhyatmik Vishwa Vidyalaya, has been in the news after several hundred women and girls were found illegally confined there last year. The ‘spiritual leader’, Dixit is facing a CBI probe and is yet to be traced by the agency.
