Strict action will be initiated against the principal and the correspondent of a school for blind at Kakinada in East Godavari district in connection with the alleged caning of three visually-impaired students last week, Andhra Pradesh deputy Chief Minister N Chinna Rajappa said in Rajahmundry on Saturday.
"A comprehensive inquiry in on in connection with the incident. After receiving the full report, we will take stringent action against the principal and the correspondent of the school," said Chinna Rajappa who also holds Home portfolio.
He, along with the Minister for Women and Child Welfare P Sujatha, visited the school on Saturday.
The school principal, identified only as Srinivas— who is partially visually impaired — and administrator K V Rao — who is visually impaired — were arrested on July 21 following an outcry after the video footage purportedly showing Rao thrashing the kids with a stick was aired by news channels.
The footage also showed Srinivas purportedly pushing the children, who were begging for mercy, to Rao.
Police had said that the corporal punishment was meted out to the boys apparently after they did not pay heed to the instructions given by the duo not to create nuisance in classrooms and for breaching the discipline by playing outside the school premises.
"The government is taking all steps to prevent recurrence of such incidents and action will be initiated against those who are responsible for caning the students; the government had already suspended the duo," Sujatha said.
After the incident came to light, the district administration took control over the management of the school, run by an NGO, and the state government has appointed a teacher at the school.
"Once we receive the full inquiry report, the government will take over (the management of) the school and run it with full-fledged staffers. No student will face any problem at the school," she said, adding that the beating of visually-challenged students at the school is deplorable.
The minister said that it was "unfortunate and intolerable that such an incident happened at a school for blind."
