Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) spokesperson Meenakshi Lekhi on Sunday said that the Vice-Chancellor of Jadavpur University is acting like an agent of the government and added that she would request the NCW to take some action in the case if the state government does not do anything about it.

"The way the law and order is being handled is not better than the badland of Uttar Pradesh and the Vice Chancellor is acting like an agent of the government," said Lekhi.

"Is it a big deal to have an inquiry when there is a charge of molestation? Children have to go for strikes to get an inquiry done. The goons are obviously from the ruling party and the VC is unable to protect the university. He has shown political side of his behaviour and character. If the government does not take any action I will request the (National Commission for Women) NCW to take the action needed," she added.

The students of the university have been demanding the resignation of the Vice Chancellor over the alleged molestation and subsequent manhandling of students during their protest.

Students had alleged that police authorities had dragged out students and manhandled them. More than 30 students were arrested by the police while some of them were also injured.

Last month, during a festival organised by the college as many as ten male students had allegedly dragged a female student of the University into the boys' hostel and molested her.

The alleged victim informed the college authorities and filed a police complaint, following which the officials have begun the investigations. However, no arrests have been made so far.
